Research Mission

The Ocean Acidification & Coral Bleaching Biological Unit investigates the biological mechanisms by which ocean acidification and thermal stress cause coral bleaching and reef ecosystem degradation. The unit conducts experimental and field research to characterize coral physiological responses to climate stressors, identify resilient coral genotypes, and develop assisted evolution and reef restoration strategies that enhance coral survival under projected future ocean conditions.

Bleaching Mechanism Research

Investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of coral bleaching — characterizing the breakdown of coral-Symbiodinium symbiosis under thermal stress and the downstream physiological consequences for coral survival.

Resilience Identification

Identifying coral genotypes and Symbiodinium strains with enhanced thermal and acidification tolerance — providing the biological material for assisted evolution and selective breeding programs.

Restoration Science

Developing evidence-based reef restoration strategies — coral gardening, assisted gene flow, and substrate enhancement — that accelerate reef recovery and build resilience to future climate stressors.
