Research Mission
The Neurobiology & Cognitive Trauma Sciences Facility investigates the neurobiological mechanisms of traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress, and cognitive impairment — generating the mechanistic understanding needed to develop better diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions. The facility conducts research spanning molecular neuroscience, neuroimaging, and cognitive assessment to characterize the full spectrum of trauma-related neurological and psychological injury.
Key Research Functions
TBI Mechanism Research
Investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of traumatic brain injury — primary and secondary injury cascades, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration — to identify therapeutic targets for neuroprotection.
Biomarker Development
Developing blood and imaging biomarkers for TBI diagnosis, severity classification, and outcome prediction — enabling objective assessment of brain injury in field settings where neuroimaging is unavailable.
PTSD Neurobiology
Investigating the neurobiological basis of post-traumatic stress disorder — characterizing the neural circuits, molecular mechanisms, and biomarkers that underlie PTSD to inform targeted therapeutic development.
