Research Mission
The Microplastics & Nano-Particle Extraction Chemistry Unit develops and applies specialized extraction, separation, and characterization methods for microplastics and engineered nanoparticles in complex environmental and biological matrices. The unit investigates the occurrence, distribution, and chemical transformation of these emerging contaminants — generating the analytical foundation needed to assess their environmental and health impacts and develop effective removal technologies.
Key Research Functions
Extraction Method Development
Developing validated extraction and purification methods for microplastics and nanoparticles from complex matrices — overcoming the analytical challenges of isolating particles from soils, sediments, tissues, and water.
Occurrence Monitoring
Conducting systematic monitoring of microplastic and nanoparticle occurrence in environmental and biological matrices — mapping contamination patterns and identifying hotspots that require remediation or regulatory attention.
Removal Technology
Evaluating and developing technologies for removing microplastics and nanoparticles from water and environmental matrices — assessing filtration, coagulation, and advanced oxidation approaches for treatment efficacy.
