Research Mission

The Meteorology & Extreme Weather Genesis Center investigates the atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamic processes that generate extreme weather events — tropical cyclones, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, derechos, and extreme precipitation. The center conducts observational campaigns, numerical weather prediction research, and process studies to advance understanding of extreme weather genesis and intensification — improving the forecasts that protect lives and enable effective disaster preparedness.

Extreme Weather Forecasting

Developing and applying numerical weather prediction models optimized for extreme weather events — advancing the accuracy and lead time of tropical cyclone, severe storm, and extreme precipitation forecasts that drive emergency response.

Genesis Research

Investigating the atmospheric conditions and physical processes that initiate and intensify extreme weather events — conducting observational campaigns and process studies that reveal the mechanisms controlling extreme weather formation.

Disaster Preparedness Support

Translating meteorological research into actionable information for disaster preparedness — developing impact-based forecast products, decision support tools, and communication strategies that enable effective emergency response.
