Research Mission
The Hydrology & River Basin Fluid Dynamics Facility investigates the movement of water through river basins — precipitation, infiltration, runoff, streamflow, and flood dynamics — to advance water resource management, flood forecasting, and drought monitoring. The facility operates hydrological monitoring networks, develops rainfall-runoff models, and conducts hydraulic analyses of river systems — providing the hydrological science needed for water security, flood risk reduction, and climate adaptation.
Key Research Functions
Flood Forecasting
Developing and operating flood forecasting systems that predict river discharge and inundation extent in advance of flood events — providing the lead time needed for evacuation, emergency response, and infrastructure protection.
Water Resource Assessment
Assessing water availability and demand across river basins — characterizing streamflow variability, groundwater recharge, and the impacts of climate change and land use on water resources to support sustainable water management.
Floodplain Mapping
Conducting hydraulic analyses and developing floodplain maps that delineate flood hazard zones — providing the spatial information needed for land use planning, flood insurance, and infrastructure siting decisions.
