Research Mission
The Human Geography & Spatial Displacement Research Unit investigates the spatial dimensions of human displacement — mapping displacement patterns, characterizing the geographic drivers of forced migration, and analyzing the spatial distribution of vulnerability across affected populations. The unit applies geographic information science, spatial analysis, and human geography methods to understand how place, territory, and spatial inequality shape displacement dynamics — providing the geographic intelligence needed for effective humanitarian response and durable solutions planning.
Key Research Functions
Displacement Mapping
Mapping displacement flows, settlement patterns, and return movements using satellite imagery, mobile data, and field surveys — providing the spatial situational awareness needed to direct humanitarian resources to displaced populations.
Vulnerability Mapping
Producing spatial vulnerability assessments that identify geographic concentrations of risk — mapping the intersection of hazard exposure, social vulnerability, and access to services to prioritize humanitarian intervention.
Durable Solutions Analysis
Assessing the geographic feasibility of durable solutions for displaced populations — evaluating conditions for safe return, local integration, and resettlement by analyzing land availability, infrastructure, and security across potential destination areas.
