Research Mission

The Groundwater Contamination & Aquifer Depletion Research Unit investigates the contamination of groundwater resources and the depletion of aquifer systems — characterizing contaminant transport, aquifer vulnerability, and the subsidence consequences of over-extraction. The unit conducts hydrogeological investigations, groundwater quality monitoring, and numerical modeling to understand aquifer dynamics and develop the science needed to protect groundwater resources and manage aquifer depletion sustainably.

Key Research Functions

Contamination Investigation

Investigating groundwater contamination — characterizing contaminant sources, transport pathways, and plume extent through field sampling, tracer tests, and numerical modeling to support remediation design and drinking water protection.

Aquifer Depletion Analysis

Monitoring and modeling aquifer water level decline and storage depletion — quantifying extraction rates, recharge deficits, and the long-term sustainability of groundwater use to inform water management policy.

Subsidence Monitoring

Measuring and predicting land subsidence caused by groundwater extraction — applying InSAR, GPS, and extensometer data to characterize subsidence rates and assess risks to infrastructure, drainage, and coastal flood vulnerability.
