Glaciology, Cryosphere & Ice-Sheet Thermal Tracking Lab

Tracking ice sheet dynamics and cryosphere change to quantify contributions to sea-level rise and global climate feedbacks.

Research Mission

The Glaciology, Cryosphere & Ice-Sheet Thermal Tracking Lab monitors and investigates the dynamics of ice sheets, glaciers, sea ice, and permafrost — quantifying cryosphere change and its contributions to sea-level rise, freshwater supply, and global climate feedbacks. The lab conducts field campaigns in polar and high-mountain environments, operates remote sensing monitoring programs, and develops ice sheet models — providing the glaciological science needed to project future sea-level rise and understand cryosphere-climate interactions.

Key Research Functions

Ice Sheet Monitoring

Monitoring ice sheet mass balance, flow velocity, and thermal structure using satellite remote sensing, airborne surveys, and in-situ instruments — quantifying the rate and pattern of ice loss that drives sea-level rise.

Cryosphere Change Analysis

Analyzing changes in glaciers, sea ice, and permafrost across the cryosphere — documenting the pace and pattern of cryosphere decline and investigating the climate feedbacks that amplify warming in polar and high-mountain regions.

Sea-Level Contribution

Quantifying the contribution of ice sheet and glacier mass loss to global and regional sea-level rise — developing ice sheet models that project future ice loss under climate scenarios to constrain sea-level rise projections.

Research Capabilities

Ice sheet mass balance monitoring
Glacier velocity and dynamics measurement
Sea ice extent and thickness tracking
Permafrost temperature monitoring
Ice core paleoclimate analysis
Ice sheet numerical modeling
