Research Mission
The Geophysics & Tectonic Plate Monitoring Laboratory operates continuous geophysical monitoring networks and conducts research into tectonic plate dynamics, crustal deformation, and subsurface structure. The laboratory integrates seismic, geodetic, and gravity data to characterize plate boundary processes, map fault systems, and detect precursory signals that may indicate elevated seismic or volcanic hazard — providing the geophysical foundation for DARAS's natural hazard assessment and early warning programs.
Key Research Functions
Tectonic Monitoring
Operating continuous geophysical monitoring networks that track tectonic plate motion, crustal strain accumulation, and fault system behavior — providing the real-time data needed to detect changes in seismic and volcanic hazard.
Subsurface Imaging
Applying seismic tomography, gravity inversion, and electromagnetic methods to image subsurface structure — mapping fault geometry, magma bodies, and crustal architecture that controls earthquake and volcanic behavior.
Hazard Assessment
Integrating geophysical monitoring data with structural models to assess seismic and volcanic hazard — characterizing the location, magnitude, and recurrence of potential events to inform risk reduction and emergency preparedness.
