Research Mission

The Geomagnetism & Terrestrial Magnetic Field Research Unit investigates the dynamics of Earth's magnetic field — its generation in the outer core, secular variation, geomagnetic reversals, and response to space weather. The unit operates geomagnetic observatories, develops field models, and assesses geomagnetic hazards to navigation, power infrastructure, and satellite operations — providing the geomagnetic science needed to protect critical systems from space weather and geomagnetic disturbance.

Key Research Functions

Field Monitoring

Operating geomagnetic observatories that continuously monitor Earth's magnetic field — providing the high-quality data needed for field modeling, space weather monitoring, and detection of geomagnetic disturbances.

Space Weather Assessment

Assessing the impact of geomagnetic storms on power grids, pipelines, satellite operations, and navigation systems — developing geomagnetically induced current models and space weather impact forecasts for infrastructure protection.

Field Modeling

Developing high-resolution geomagnetic field models that characterize the main field, crustal anomalies, and external field variations — supporting navigation, mineral exploration, and scientific investigation of core dynamics.
