Geographic Information Systems (GIS) & Remote Sensing Engineering Team

Applying GIS and remote sensing to generate geospatial intelligence for disaster response, environmental monitoring, and operations.

Research Mission

The GIS & Remote Sensing Engineering Team develops and applies geospatial technologies — satellite imagery analysis, aerial survey, LiDAR, and geographic information systems — to generate the spatial intelligence needed for disaster response, environmental monitoring, infrastructure assessment, and operational planning. The team builds geospatial data pipelines, develops analytical tools, and produces the maps and spatial analyses that enable DARAS programs to understand and act on the geographic dimensions of complex challenges.

Key Research Functions

Remote Sensing Analysis

Analyzing satellite and aerial imagery to detect change, assess damage, map land cover, and monitor environmental conditions — applying image processing and machine learning to extract actionable intelligence from geospatial data.

Geospatial Data Integration

Building and maintaining geospatial databases that integrate diverse data sources — satellite imagery, field surveys, sensor networks, and open data — into coherent spatial information products for DARAS programs.

Operations Support

Providing real-time geospatial support to DARAS operations — producing maps, spatial analyses, and situational awareness products that enable effective decision-making during disaster response, field operations, and humanitarian missions.

Research Capabilities

Satellite imagery analysis and change detection
LiDAR data processing and analysis
Drone-based aerial survey
GIS database development
Spatial analysis and modeling
Real-time geospatial operations support
