Research Mission
The Field Surgical Sciences & Austere Medicine Lab develops and validates surgical techniques, anesthetic protocols, and medical procedures optimized for austere, resource-limited field environments where conventional operating room conditions are unavailable. The lab investigates damage control surgery, field anesthesia, wound management, and infection prevention in low-resource settings — generating the evidence base for field surgical protocols that maximize survival when definitive care is hours or days away.

Damage Control Surgery
Developing and validating damage control surgical techniques for austere environments — abbreviated initial surgery, temporary closure, and staged definitive repair protocols that maximize survival when resources are limited.
Field Anesthesia
Developing safe and effective anesthetic protocols for field surgical settings — evaluating ketamine, regional anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia care approaches that work without full anesthetic infrastructure.
Protocol Validation
Validating field surgical and medical protocols through simulation, cadaveric studies, and clinical data analysis — building the evidence base that justifies adoption of austere medicine techniques in operational settings.
