Research Mission
The Energy-Efficient Buildings & Rapid 3D-Printed Eco-Shelter Lab designs energy-efficient building systems and develops additive manufacturing approaches for rapid shelter construction — creating sustainable, resilient, and affordable housing solutions for both permanent communities and disaster-affected populations. The lab investigates passive design strategies, building envelope performance, and 3D concrete printing to advance the construction technologies needed for climate-resilient, low-carbon communities.
Key Research Functions
Energy-Efficient Design
Designing buildings that minimize energy consumption through passive strategies — optimized orientation, insulation, natural ventilation, and daylighting — reducing operational carbon while improving thermal comfort in diverse climate zones.
3D Printing Construction
Developing 3D concrete printing and additive construction systems for rapid shelter production — advancing the technology from laboratory demonstration to field-deployable capability for disaster reconstruction and affordable housing.
Disaster Reconstruction
Developing rapid reconstruction approaches for disaster-affected communities — combining prefabrication, 3D printing, and local materials to rebuild safe, durable, and energy-efficient housing faster and at lower cost than conventional methods.
