Research Mission

The Drought-Resistant Crop & Soil Microbiology Facility develops drought-tolerant crop varieties and investigates the soil microbiome interactions that enhance plant water-use efficiency and stress tolerance. The facility applies genomic breeding, genetic engineering, and microbiome manipulation to build the crop and soil systems needed to sustain agricultural productivity in regions facing increasing water scarcity under climate change.

Key Research Functions

Drought Tolerance Research

Investigating the molecular and physiological mechanisms of plant drought tolerance — identifying the genes, pathways, and traits that enable crops to maintain productivity under water deficit conditions.

Soil Microbiome Engineering

Characterizing and manipulating soil microbial communities to enhance plant drought tolerance and water-use efficiency — developing microbiome-based biostimulants that improve crop performance under water stress.

Variety Development

Applying genomic breeding and genetic engineering to develop drought-tolerant crop varieties suited to the agro-ecological conditions of water-stressed regions — building the seed systems that sustain food production.
