Research Mission
The Desertification & Arid-Land Expansion Analytics Unit monitors and investigates the processes of desertification and dryland degradation — tracking the expansion of arid conditions, characterizing the drivers of land degradation, and evaluating the effectiveness of restoration interventions. The unit applies remote sensing, field monitoring, and land surface modeling to understand how climate change, land use, and soil degradation interact to drive desertification — providing the analytical foundation for land restoration and food security programs.
Key Research Functions
Desertification Monitoring
Monitoring the spatial extent and rate of desertification using satellite remote sensing and field observations — tracking vegetation loss, soil degradation, and arid boundary expansion to quantify land degradation trends.
Driver Analysis
Investigating the climatic and anthropogenic drivers of desertification — disentangling the contributions of rainfall variability, temperature increase, overgrazing, and unsustainable agriculture to land degradation.
Restoration Assessment
Evaluating the effectiveness of land restoration interventions — reforestation, sustainable land management, and soil conservation — in reversing desertification and restoring ecosystem services in degraded drylands.
