Research Mission

The Desalination Chemistry & Osmotic Membrane Research Unit develops advanced membrane materials and desalination processes to expand access to clean water in water-scarce regions. The unit investigates the chemistry of ion transport through membranes, develops next-generation reverse osmosis and forward osmosis membranes, and engineers desalination systems optimized for energy efficiency and resilience in off-grid and humanitarian deployment contexts.

Key Research Functions

Membrane Development

Developing next-generation desalination membranes with enhanced water permeability, salt rejection, and fouling resistance — applying thin-film composite chemistry, nanocomposite materials, and surface modification to advance membrane performance.

Process Optimization

Optimizing desalination process design for energy efficiency and operational resilience — developing energy recovery systems, pre-treatment strategies, and system configurations that minimize energy consumption and maintenance requirements.

Humanitarian Deployment

Engineering portable and modular desalination systems for humanitarian deployment — developing compact, robust, and low-maintenance systems that provide safe drinking water in disaster response and water-scarce community settings.
