Crowd Dynamics & Evacuation Route Social Modeling Team

Modeling crowd dynamics and evacuation behavior to design safer emergency egress routes and mass event safety protocols.

Research Mission

The Crowd Dynamics & Evacuation Route Social Modeling Team develops social and computational models of crowd behavior and evacuation dynamics — simulating how populations move through physical environments during emergencies to identify bottlenecks, optimize egress routes, and design safer evacuation plans. The team integrates social science understanding of evacuation decision-making with agent-based simulation and physical crowd dynamics to produce operationally actionable evacuation planning tools.

Key Research Functions

Evacuation Simulation

Developing agent-based models that simulate population evacuation under different scenarios — testing route configurations, timing strategies, and communication approaches to identify optimal evacuation plans before disasters occur.

Crowd Safety Analysis

Analyzing crowd dynamics at mass gatherings and in emergency egress situations — identifying dangerous density concentrations, flow conflicts, and bottlenecks that create crush hazards and designing interventions to prevent crowd disasters.

Decision Modeling

Modeling evacuation decision-making processes — investigating how people decide whether and when to evacuate, which routes to choose, and how social influence shapes evacuation behavior to improve warning and instruction design.
