Research Mission
The Coastal Dynamics, Erosion & Tidal Current Mechanics Team investigates the physical processes that shape coastlines — wave action, tidal currents, storm surge, sediment transport, and sea-level change — to understand coastal erosion, predict shoreline evolution, and inform coastal protection strategies. The team conducts field measurements, laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling to characterize coastal dynamics and develop the science needed for resilient coastal infrastructure and community protection.
Key Research Functions
Erosion Assessment
Monitoring and modeling coastal erosion processes — quantifying shoreline change rates, identifying erosion hotspots, and predicting future shoreline position under scenarios of sea-level rise and changing storm climate.
Sediment Dynamics
Investigating sediment transport pathways and budgets in coastal systems — characterizing how waves, tides, and currents move sediment along and across the shore to inform beach nourishment, dredging, and coastal management decisions.
Storm Surge Modeling
Developing and applying storm surge and coastal flooding models that predict inundation extent and depth during tropical cyclones and extratropical storms — providing the spatial flood forecasts needed for evacuation planning and emergency response.
