Research Mission
The Civil Engineering & Structural Load-Testing Center conducts structural analysis, load testing, and integrity assessment of civil infrastructure — from bridges and buildings to dams and retaining structures. The center provides the structural engineering expertise needed to assess infrastructure condition, evaluate load capacity, design resilient structures, and conduct rapid post-disaster structural assessments that determine whether damaged structures are safe for occupancy or require demolition.
Key Research Functions
Structural Assessment
Conducting comprehensive structural assessments of civil infrastructure — combining visual inspection, non-destructive testing, and analytical modeling to evaluate structural condition, identify deficiencies, and determine remaining service life.
Load Testing
Performing structural load tests that verify design assumptions, validate analytical models, and demonstrate load-carrying capacity — providing the empirical data needed for infrastructure certification and post-rehabilitation verification.
Post-Disaster Assessment
Conducting rapid post-disaster structural assessments following earthquakes, floods, and blast events — applying standardized protocols to classify structural damage and determine occupancy safety for emergency response and recovery operations.
