Research Mission

The Carbon Sequestration & Atmospheric Scrubbing R&D Team develops chemical technologies for capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and industrial emission sources — advancing direct air capture, post-combustion capture, and mineralization approaches that can contribute to climate stabilization at scale. The team investigates sorbent materials, process engineering, and carbon utilization pathways — building the chemical technology portfolio needed to address the carbon removal challenge.

Key Research Functions

Sorbent Development

Developing advanced solid and liquid sorbent materials for CO2 capture — amine-functionalized materials, metal-organic frameworks, and ionic liquids — with high capacity, selectivity, and regenerability at low energy cost.

Process Engineering

Engineering carbon capture processes that integrate sorbent materials with efficient contactor designs, regeneration cycles, and compression systems — optimizing the techno-economic performance of capture at scale.

Carbon Utilization

Developing pathways for converting captured CO2 into useful products — fuels, chemicals, building materials, and agricultural inputs — that create economic value while achieving permanent or long-duration carbon storage.
