Research Mission
The Bio-Inspired Engineering & Biomimetics Lab translates the design principles evolved by biological systems into engineering solutions — developing materials, structures, robots, and sensors inspired by nature's solutions to complex engineering challenges. The lab investigates biological systems for their engineering insights and applies biomimetic principles to create novel technologies with applications in defense, medicine, environmental monitoring, and disaster response.
Key Research Functions
Biomimetic Materials
Developing materials inspired by biological structures — spider silk, nacre, gecko adhesion, lotus self-cleaning — that achieve performance characteristics unattainable by conventional engineering approaches.
Bio-Inspired Robotics
Designing robots and actuators inspired by biological locomotion, manipulation, and sensing — creating systems that navigate complex environments and perform tasks beyond the capability of conventional robotic designs.
Sensing Translation
Translating the extraordinary sensing capabilities of biological systems — bat echolocation, shark electroreception, insect compound vision — into engineered sensor technologies for defense and environmental monitoring.
