Research Mission

The Atmospheric Dynamics & Pressure System Modeling Unit investigates large-scale atmospheric circulation, pressure system dynamics, and teleconnection patterns that govern regional weather and climate variability. The unit develops and applies atmospheric models to advance medium-range weather prediction, seasonal climate forecasting, and understanding of how large-scale circulation changes drive regional climate impacts — providing the atmospheric dynamics expertise that underpins DARAS's weather and climate programs.

Key Research Functions

Circulation Modeling

Developing and applying atmospheric general circulation models that simulate large-scale pressure systems, jet streams, and circulation patterns — advancing the representation of atmospheric dynamics in weather and climate prediction systems.

Teleconnection Research

Investigating teleconnection patterns — ENSO, the North Atlantic Oscillation, the Madden-Julian Oscillation — that link distant regions of the atmosphere and drive predictable regional climate variability at seasonal timescales.

Forecast Development

Developing medium-range and extended-range forecast products that leverage atmospheric dynamics research — improving the skill of 1–4 week forecasts that bridge the gap between weather prediction and seasonal climate outlooks.
