Analytical Chemistry & Mass Spectrometry Laboratory

Identifying and quantifying chemical compounds with precision to support environmental, forensic, and security applications.

Research Mission

The Analytical Chemistry & Mass Spectrometry Laboratory develops and applies advanced analytical methods to identify, characterize, and quantify chemical compounds across a wide range of matrices — from environmental samples and biological fluids to materials and complex mixtures. The laboratory's mass spectrometry platforms provide the molecular fingerprinting capability that underpins DARAS's chemical analysis programs, supporting environmental monitoring, forensic investigation, pharmaceutical quality control, and chemical threat detection.

Key Research Functions

Compound Identification

Applying high-resolution mass spectrometry and chromatographic separation to identify unknown compounds in complex matrices — providing the molecular-level characterization needed for environmental, forensic, and security investigations.

Trace Detection

Developing and validating ultra-sensitive analytical methods for trace-level detection of chemical contaminants, toxicants, and threat agents — achieving detection limits that enable early warning and forensic attribution.

Method Development

Developing and validating fit-for-purpose analytical methods for DARAS priority analytes — ensuring the accuracy, precision, and robustness needed for regulatory compliance and scientific defensibility.
