Research Mission
The Acoustics, Sonar Engineering & Optic Sensor Design Unit develops acoustic, sonar, and optical sensor systems for underwater detection, maritime surveillance, and environmental monitoring applications. The unit applies underwater acoustics, signal processing, and optical engineering to create sensor systems that detect, classify, and track objects and phenomena in challenging underwater and atmospheric environments — providing the sensing capability that underpins DARAS's maritime security and environmental monitoring programs.
Key Research Functions
Sonar Engineering
Designing active and passive sonar systems for underwater detection and classification — developing transducer arrays, signal processing algorithms, and display systems that extract target information from complex acoustic environments.
Optical Sensor Design
Engineering optical sensor systems for maritime and atmospheric applications — developing imaging, lidar, and spectroscopic sensors that provide target detection, environmental characterization, and situational awareness in challenging conditions.
Environmental Acoustics
Applying acoustic monitoring to environmental science — developing passive acoustic systems that detect and classify marine mammals, monitor underwater noise pollution, and characterize the acoustic environment of ocean ecosystems.
